The Age of Exploration

Port 1- Getting ready for the voyage

Before you leave...

What possible rewards might come from exploring the seas for new lands?
The rewards you might get from exploring the seas for new lands are the pride and the status of finding new land and spreading Christianity which was the main objective of exploring. The Europeans believed that they had a duty to spread Christianity and it was that which caused them to explore the lands.

What are the risks involved in embarking on a voyage into the unknown?
When you are embarking on a voyage into the unknown, you don’t even have even the slightest idea of what you will experience, so you don’t even know what the risks are. You don’t know what the weather is going to be like, you don’t know what living things you might encounter on the voyage. There are thousands of risks you probably will encounter which you don’t even know of. The men that go on these voyages are very brave.

What will you do if you actually run into other people?
What I would do if I was on a voyage and I ran into other people, I would feel very uncomfortable and even possibly in danger depending on their actions. These are people I don’t know at all and I have no idea how they will react to me. I would be very careful and cautious of my actions around them. However, I would want to establish a relationship because I don’t want them to feel uncomfortable and in danger around me just like the way I would feel around them. I would establish a relationship that I need for my job.

Compass

One of the instruments that is critical for you to have for the long voyage is a compass. A compass is a navigation instrument that is about the size of your hand. It is a navigation tool because it always points to the North Pole. Therefore, no matter where you are, you will always know which way you are facing with a compass.

Port 3- Impacts of European's Age of Exploration

Atlantic Slave Trade
Identify the causes of African slavery.
The Europeans planned to use Native Americans as slaves to help with sugar plantations and tobacco farms for it required a large number of people to work. However, millions of Native Americans died from disease, and brutal treatment. With the Native Americans not to help them, Brazil, and southern colonies of North America turned to Africa for workers. This resulted in the slave trade.
It first started in Africa itself, when Africa justified enslavement with the Muslim belief. However, they had chances to become free and live life they way they wanted to. In the 1400s, the Europeans set out to explore Africa to trade gold but when the Native Americans started dying, they started to use Africans as slaves. It was because Africans were they had been exposed to disease and had built up immunity, had experience in farming, and were less likely to escape because they didn’t know the ways in the new land. Also, they were easier to be caught if they escaped because of their skin color.

Explain the Triangular Trade Route.
The triangular trade trade route is the route that is taken by the Europeans for trade and slavery. First, Europeans transported goods to the west coast of Africa, and they traded there and took Africans to be taken as slaves. Then, they were transported and sold in the West Indies. Europeans bought goods in the West Indies and sailed to Europe with these products. It is called the Triangular Trade Route because the three way trip makes a shape of a triangle.

Identify the consequences of the slave trade.
There were many consequences for both Africa and America. For Africa, their fittest members were taken away, and they became very poor for there were no one to work in the fields for crops anymore. Another important consequence of the slave trade was the introduction to guns in the continent. The guns were later used violently in the continent.
When Africans were enslaved me forced to work in America, they brought their culture, music, art, religion etc. and that influenced America because it changed their culture. Also, after slavery was ended, there became mixed-race populations and that influenced America as well.
